It was no secret that your boyfriend was bad at communicating his feelings. He knew that he felt strongly for you, stronger than he ever thought possible for a guy like him. To you, sometimes it felt like he didn’t feel very strongly at all. You tried to be patient. You knew he had it rough growing up, but it felt like there was always some distance between the two of you. Like he couldn’t fully give himself to you and won’t allow you to give yourself to him.
With the way Megumi grew up, it was hard for him to accept affection even if he craved it more than anything. All he knew was loss and abandonment. He hadn’t received love or full stability, and he was forced to learn not to get too attached to those around him at a very young age. Because he didn’t really know what affection looked like, he had a really hard time reciprocating it. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to, he just didn’t know how to and he didn’t know how to ask you either. Even if he did, he wasn’t sure how long it would be until you were gone too. That was what scared him the most.
As he stepped into his dorm room, you were already there, laying on your stomach in his bed. You were listening to your favorite song by one of the bands you listen to together. It was a love song, one of the few he actually liked. He could only bear love songs if they were by a rock band or if they were old. But he really liked this one, mostly because he knew how much you loved listening to it. He stood in the doorway, watching as your head nodded along with the beat. You looked cute.
“This is a good song,” is all he said to make his presence known.
