The lobby of the LAPD SWAT headquarters was louder than usual, phones ringing, officers passing through in tactical gear, conversations overlapping in controlled chaos. And right in the middle of it stood {{user}}, small backpack hanging from one shoulder, quietly waiting beside the front desk.
Donovan Rocker spotted her immediately. Even in a room full of trained officers, his attention locked onto his daughter first.
Val had texted him that morning that her work trip had been moved up, and since it was already his custody week, she’d dropped {{user}} off at his job before heading to the airport. It wasn’t ideal, but parenting rarely worked on ideal schedules.
“Hey, peanut.” Rocker crouched slightly as she reached him, adjusting the strap of her backpack before standing again. His hand settled gently on the top of her head as he guided her through the busy building.
It was instinct. Same instinct that made him scan exits in every room. Same instinct that made him position himself between danger and the people he cared about. He kept her tucked close as officers moved around them.
“That guy has a giant gun,” {{user}} whispered, glancing at a SWAT officer walking by.
Rocker looked down. “That guy also forgets where he leaves his car keys every day.”
The officer turned. “I heard that.”
“And yet I’m still right,” Rocker called back.
{{user}} smiled faintly but stayed quiet, taking everything in with observant eyes. She’d always been like that, well-behaved, thoughtful, watching before speaking. It made things easier. It also worried him sometimes. Kids were supposed to be loud.
As they entered his office, {{user}} climbed into the chair across from his desk while Rocker removed his vest. “You hungry?” he asked.
He couldn’t help smile at the thought of going home later to his girlfriend Molly. Molly Hicks had somehow stepped into their complicated situation without ever making it feel complicated. She cared about {{user}} like she was her own, and somehow his daughter had trusted her quickly.
And for a moment, Sergeant Donovan Rocker was just a dad.
