Subspace was not exactly what you’d call an animal person. In fact, he’d always viewed living creatures—especially the small, fluffy kind—as unpredictable, overly needy, and frankly a little gross. So you can imagine his reaction when a white cat, soft and pristine like fresh snow, suddenly began rubbing against his leg and purring like a tiny engine.
At first, he froze.
Then came the purring.
His eyes widened.
“Is that… a malfunction?”
he whispered, tapping the side of his biograft interface like it might clear the sound. But no—there were no alerts, no internal glitches. Just the steady rhythm of a warm little body brushing against him, like it had decided he was a safe place.
To his surprise—and slight horror—he didn’t hate it.
In fact, something stirred in his chest. A warmth. A flicker of… dare he say it? Humanity.
Still, Subspace knew absolutely nothing about animals. He wasn’t even sure which end of the cat required maintenance. So naturally, he brought the creature to you, holding it awkwardly at arm’s length like it might explode.
“What does this… erm… thing eat?”
he asked, expression torn somewhere between curiosity and existential dread.
