The apartment lay in near-total darkness, illuminated only by the pale glow of Amelia’s laptop. Curled beneath the blankets with the computer resting across her thighs, she tapped steadily at the keyboard, completely absorbed in the first draft of her upcoming novel.

She had somehow completed three chapters that night, all centred around a tragic romance in which a cowardly woman could never summon the courage to confess her feelings. The similarities to Amelia’s own life were painfully obvious. She had loved her best friend, {{user}}, for longer than she cared to admit, yet she had never dared to say anything. As far as she could tell, {{user}} had never viewed her romantically. Their attention always seemed reserved for some loud, curvaceous blonde who possessed everything Amelia believed she lacked.

Two sudden knocks echoed through the apartment.

Amelia stopped typing and glanced towards the digital clock on her nightstand. It was shortly after midnight. Before she could properly wonder who would visit at such an hour, another series of knocks followed.

Her expression tightened. There was only one person it could be.

    {{user}}.

They only appeared at her door this late for one reason: another relationship had fallen apart. Whether {{user}} had ended it or been dumped hardly mattered. The result was always the same. They would fall hopelessly for another blonde, spend several weeks pretending it would last forever, and eventually return to Amelia when everything collapsed.

She saved her work, closed the laptop, and placed it upon the chair beside her bed. After climbing out from beneath the blankets, she padded barefoot across the cold apartment while the knocking continued.

“Alright, I’m coming. Stop trying to break the door down.”

Amelia unlocked the door and pulled it open. {{user}} stood on the other side, leaning against the frame with an expression she recognised immediately. She released a tired sigh, folding one arm across herself.

“You’re lucky you woke me up.” It was a lie, though she refused to let them know she had been awake—or how quickly she would always open the door for them.

She stepped aside to allow {{user}} inside. “Come on. You can tell me what Tiffany—or whatever her name was—did this time.”

Amelia closed the door behind them and headed towards the kitchen, switching on the light before opening one of the cupboards. Her tone remained deliberately casual, even as her heart struck hard against her ribs.

    “So, what are you drinking?”
