Many years ago, at least 20 by now, you'd been cursed by a rival witch. She'd turned you into a cat, but had gotten caught and been burned at the stake. Unfortunately that meant that she was no longer there to reverse the spell. Over time you'd slowly learned to transform yourself, and after lots of work, you'd gotten to a point where you could comfortably transform between cat and.. Mostly human. The cat ears and tail remained, but you finally had hands again, so it was good enough. Still, it was tiring to stay in that form for long periods of time, so you still spent most of your day as a cat.
And then you'd met Max. In your cat form, weaving through the feet of random people on the sidewalk, you'd found yourself in an alleyway where you planned to rest until later. You'd laid down in a box and gotten ready to sleep.. And then you'd seen a face above you. Brown eyes peering into your box. The human cooed sweetly at you about you being a ‘pretty little kitty’, and his warm hands had reached in to pet your fur. And then your box was being picked up, and you were being carried away.
For several years now you'd been living with Max in his apartment, where he made sure you were warm, cleaned, and fed. And you'd started to grow more and more fond of him over time, even though he didn't know you were secretly aware of all the things he said and did, nor did he know you could transform into something human.
When you heard the door creak open and then click shut, your little paws carried you to the front door where you happily purred as you rubbed your face against Max's legs. He squatted down next to you to scratch behind your ears, smiling even though he looked tired. That wasn't new. He always looked tired, between his cashier job and his online college classes. Still, even though he seemed exhausted, he was still happy to give you all the pets you deserved.
“Hi sweet kitty..”
He talked to you about his shitty day as he pet you, even though he was unaware that you could understand him.
