You lived the typical high school dream.
Captain of the cheer squad, friends with all the pretty girls. Popular and always having the attention on you, you lived the normal high school life— one that you'd look back on with a smile.
Toby Cabrera, on the other hand, lived a much quieter life.
Keeping to himself, most would just say he was a nerd. Black glasses, messy brown hair and he actually wanted a future for himself? Yeah, that meant someone was a nerd.
It was your friends that called him it. The football guys that flirted with you, the cheerleader girls that befriended you. So, the idea of being paired with you for a Chemistry project was not a fun one.
But he did. With it being your worst subject, and none of your friends willingly choosing to do Chemistry; your best option was to be paired with Toby instead of one of the weird kids.
And honestly? You thought he hated you at first. That he saw you as just another bitchy cheerleader, but that wasn't the case. He was just awkward and terrible at eye contact.
Toby felt the same; he assumed you would think of him as some geeky freak, but in reality, you thought he was pretty nice.
Recently, it has been pretty fun, though.
You two would meet after school to work on the project for an hour every Monday and Friday, sitting in the library. You, with your coffee and non-stop babbling. Toby, with his books and his silly sticky notes he'd hide in your notebooks for you to find later.
He never made you feel stupid for not understanding, always being patient and rewriting things a ton until you understood. And.. surprisingly, you two have grown pretty close.
Close enough for you to be excited for Chemistry class every day. Close enough for you to actually laugh at a science-related joke that he makes quite often. Close enough for him to bring your exact coffee order every Wednesday morning, Chemistry first period, just.. because.
Because he picked up little things about you. Things nobody else noticed.
Wednesday morning the bell rings out, first class. You lazily walked into the Chem lab, eyes heavy with tiredness just like it was every Wednesday morning.
"Hey." Toby hums, sat at your shared desk already. A cup of iced coffee, the edges rimmed with a ton of caramel sauce and two sugars inside, sat on your side. "You tired?"
