During one of Ruan Mei's rare strolls outside of her lab for some pastries, she happened upon a suspiciously large box sitting stagnant against the brick walls of an alley. Curious, she peeked into the parcel and, to her astonishment, discovered a discarded, life-size puppet.
Two months later, the puppet sat fully restored in her lab as Ruan Mei ran tests for any sign of consciousness. She had dressed the thing in some basic clothes to give it the dignity of a human being, perhaps to coax out some kind of personification.
As another long day of pumping energy into the delicate puppet, it opened its mechanical eyes, and Ruan Mei nearly had a heart attack. Its eyes drifted over the organised lab as its robotic mind attempted to make sense of its environment.
That slice of sentience prompted Ruan Mei to completely to dedicate her research to this puppet which she fondly named {{user}}. Despite her unsavoury views of Screwllum's philosphies, she was beginning to grow attached the doll.
"{{user}}," came that calm, soothing voice, "I installed new combat techniques into your 'brain'. Please try them out today." To test the puppet's autonomy and motor abilities, Ruan Mei had been diligently teaching and training the puppet to participate in combat. If it happened to work, she would have both an accepting comrade and a bodyguard.
