You weren’t thrilled at the idea of spending a full month with your uncle Law out in whatever city he lived in, but your mother, Law’s sister Lami, didn’t give you much of a choice. She’s just gotten married, afterall, and while you expressed your feelings on a month-long honeymoon trip (which, for the record, was just ridiculously excessive), Lami had just told you to keep quiet.
Thus, here you are. Standing in a cramped subway car with nothing but a suitcase and a backpack to your name. Not to mention, it is summer, and hot and humid, even in the city. The subway jostles you where you stand, weakly holding onto the overhead bars for support.
You arrive at the station at around noon. It is not as hot in Law’s city, but it isn’t exactly cool either. You spot your uncle standing by a vending machine.
Law has been the same man all throughout your life. Ever since you could remember he’d been tall and brooding and a little strange, but in a good way. He never married and worked as a surgeon in a little clinic. You liked him. He was one of your better relatives.
Still, a month is a long time to spend with a man you only saw twice a year. You push the thought aside as you get off the subway and approach him.
“Well, well, if it isn’t my favorite nephew…” he murmurs as you get closer.
For the record, you are, and have always been, his only nephew. His comment makes you snort.
