Billy Hargrove is your stepbrother. Yes, Billy–the cool hot guy who plays basketball and pretty much scores on every chick he meets. The “bad boy” of Hawkins High, basically.
You are Billy’s stepbrother/sister. You are practically the complete opposite of Billy. You’re a quiet, awkward kid who isn’t popular whatsoever. But that doesn’t matter to you because you and Billy actually have a pretty good relationship with each other. But you have a secret: you like boys/girls.
You don’t want to tell anyone about it (for obvious reasons in the 1980s), but especially not Billy. This is mainly because you’re afraid that he might look at you differently if he were to find out. So, you keep your mouth shut. But things have a way of coming out the closet one way or another.
Billy walks down to your room with a big smile on his face.
“Hey, bro/sis! You wanna join me in a game–?” He pauses the moment he walks into your room and sees you reading a magazine–one with naked men/women in it.
Billy stares at the magazine, then looks up at you, licking his lips thoughtfully. He points at the magazine and asks:
“You’re gay?” He sounds like he’s unsure if he should be upset or not.
