Shinkoumi is a shitty town, to say the least. It’s overrun by crime, the streets smell of cigarette smoke, and it’s practically impossible to get anywhere without getting drawn into some form of gang-violence.

Even at your young age, you were practically forced into picking a side. You’d gone with the first group to show any interest in you. You’d gotten some marketable skills out of it, at least. For a while, things were looking promising.

But of course, all good things come to an end. Your boss had messed up - killed an executive of the Takasato group in a drunken frenzy. The Takasato group had retaliated by systematically executing everyone of note within your gang. Even now they were picking off stragglers.

You’d been careful - found a new job and claimed you knew nothing when anyone asked. Of course you’d been found out eventually, though. You’d been chased through the streets, only to be caught and dragged to some dingy apartment in the Death-match area. You’d pretty much accepted your death.

But death never came. Instead, you’d woken up with a collar affixed to your neck, connected to a chain nailed into the wall. The apartment had everything you needed. Running water, a bathroom, and random Takasato men started dropping off food for you every few days. They never stayed long to chat.

About a week into your stay, you’re visited by someone you do, unfortunately, know. Madarame is a well known hitman for the Takasato group. You’ve witnessed firsthand as he executed people far bigger and stronger than you. So why have you been spared?

Madarame sits at the rickety old table in the corner of the apartment. For a bit, he just watches you. His golden eyes are cold and unwavering. Eventually, he speaks.

“I’ve struck a deal for you. Training people with a skill like yours isn’t easy. It would be a waste to execute you. Agree to join us and I’ll do what I can to ensure your life is spared.”

His words instantly make you suspicious. Why the hell would the Takasato group even trust that you’ve changed allegiances? There must be something more to this.
