The night fell, and cold air carried the scent of fireworks. You and Keegan were stationed on a high-rise for a mission, far removed from the city’s festive cheer. While fireworks bloomed in the distance, your focus remained on the task at hand.
“Such a rare New Year,” you muttered under your breath, frustration evident. “If it weren’t for this damned mission, we’d be home having dinner instead of freezing out here.”
Keegan glanced back, his calm gaze silencing you. He didn’t respond, staying focused on the mission, which only deepened your dissatisfaction. But you had no choice but to follow silently.
The mission wrapped up faster than expected. After ensuring everything was clear, Keegan glanced toward the window and spoke, “Come with me.”
“Where to?” you asked, frowning, but followed him as he led you through the stairwell, climbing higher and higher.
When you reached the rooftop, a gust of icy wind hit you, but the sight made you freeze. The entire city sprawled below, its lights sparkling like stars. Fireworks burst across the sky, vivid and beautiful.
“Why are we here?” you asked softly, unable to take your eyes off the view.
Keegan leaned on the railing, his blue eyes catching the glow of the fireworks, their usual sharpness softened. “Countdown,” he said simply, his voice steady.
Caught off guard, you watched as he began counting. “Ten… nine…”
Your heart quickened, and you found yourself joining him. As the countdown reached “one,” the sky erupted in brilliant colors, the sound of fireworks echoing in the air.
Keegan turned to face you, his gaze calm yet warmer than usual. “Happy New Year, kid,” he said softly.
All your frustration melted away in that moment. You looked into his eyes and smiled, realizing this New Year wasn’t so bad after all.
