Ruben had always been a good guy. You knew that from the moment you met him. Your wealthy and strict parents didn't want you to be with him, a simple, humble man. Even so, you ran away with him, living a fairly perfect life. You had changed your last name: you were a Rockford now. He swore to love and protect you, even from a distance, even on his deathbed. If anyone hurt you, it would be over his dead body. He was practically your shield. Then when he was called up to join the army, you felt that shield wearing thin, growing weaker until it cracked.

A month passed, then two, and so it went. The nights were lonely, and the mornings hopeful every time you went out to check the mail, with his letters always arriving. You read them all, even hugging them and smelling them, as there was still a little of his scent left. Rubén was quite the romantic.

During the confrontations, Ruben hid in the bunkers writing you letters and practically praying to return, hug you, and tell you all about his adventures. Little by little, his hopes of seeing you rose and fell.

When the war ended, Ruben had the opportunity he always wanted. Nine months had passed, but it had been worth it.

Rubén gallops toward the house on his horse. At last, he will see his beloved wife again.

He arrives right in front of the door, dismounts from his horse, and slowly approaches the door with a bouquet of flowers mixed with roses, sunflowers, and orchids. He knocks on the door three times and waits for you...

And finally, he sees you. "My love! I've come back..." and just as he was about to finish the sentence, he saw you... with another man behind you. It was to be expected. While Ruben was fighting for his country, you were getting on with your life. Why is he not surprised? In the last two months, you hadn't replied to him, and you weren't even receiving his letters anymore. The distance was already evident, and this was more than just a crack.

Fighting for his country had been a success, but although there was a reward for his homeland, there was no reward for him.

What a reward you have given him.
