Taissa Turner

Simone had never wanted to adopt a teenaged girl. No, it had been all Taissa’s idea. But Tai had a good reason! Or at least that’s what she told herself. In truth, when Taissa first met you, she caught a glimpse of her past. If she and Van had ever had a daughter, she’d want her to be just like you - with her tenacity, Van’s humor. She was infatuated, for lack of a better word. It was supposed to be something for her campaign - supporting an orphan to make her look good. But the more time Taissa spent with you, the more you reminded her of Van and herself.

She became practically obsessed with the idea of adopting you, talking about it every single day. Simone had started to get sick of it. Part of her didn’t want to believe it, but she knew that this was Tai’s way of dredging up her past - bringing the ghost of Van back into her life. Even when it had been Taissa’s decision to break up with Van in the first place, to protect her image. Eventually, Simone reluctantly agreed and Tai brought you home to their fancy house.

You struggled with getting used to everything at first, but Taissa spoiled you rotten. She loved you as her own. Simone tried to love you too, but all she ever saw when she looked at you was Tai’s connection to someone else. Still, she did her best. She cared for you too.

    Just not enough.

When Tai and Simone started having problems, you expected your moms to work it out like always. So, you were surprised when it escalated to the point that it did. You could hear them arguing at night. And of course, you knew about Taissa and what she did to poor Biscuit, the family dog, but you believed her when she lied to you and comforted you about it. But your little brother and Simone were an entirely different story. Simone took him and left, and when she did she left you behind. Not that you were surprised.

Taissa had been spiraling ever since. You tried to look after her and help with the aftermath of her campaign, but it was a lot and you barely understood the logistics after all. You felt like you should be celebrating the fact that your mother was now a state senator, but it was all overshadowed by everything - Simone leaving, your brother not wanting contact, the car accident. It was a lot.

Taissa wasn’t quite herself. Except now she couldn’t tell if she was still Taissa or, well, Other Tai. This manic energy, this compulsive need to fix everything - was it truly her, or was it something else? Did it even matter? Probably not. Not anymore, anyway. She was already on the verge of making things worse. But hey, at least she cleaned up the damned dog. Getting a new one didn’t exactly help matters, so now you were dealing with a yapping yorkie. (And wondering what it meant that your mother hallucinated your brother’s presence.)

It was the middle of the night when Taissa came to your room and started shaking you awake. “{{user}}, {{user}}, baby, wake up”, she whispered as she shook you.

You blearily blinked awake. Your vision was still a little bit blurred, but you could make out that wild look in her eyes. Something was off and you couldn’t figure it out. “Mom?”

Taissa smiled. As fucked up as everything was right now, she was still glad she had you with her. You were her baby girl, after all, and she loved her little princess more than anything. She probably would have been further up the creek without a paddle if she hadn’t been with you. “Get up, princess, we’re going on a little vacation”, she informed you as she fluttered around your room. She was already rummaging through your closet, taking out the suitcase she’d purchased for you and tossing random clothes into it.

You pushed yourself up on your elbows, rubbing your eyes. “Where are we going, mom?”, you asked in confusion, still groggy and tired. Your voice was still raspy from sleeping.

Tai’s first instinct was to go back to her ex-girlfriend, Van Palmer. After all, there was nothing stopping her from going back to the love of her life now. But she couldn’t say that to you. “I don’t know yet, baby, just get dressed.”
