The truck rattles down a ruined road, wheels crunching gravel. Manny laughs up front with the driver, pretending things aren’t falling apart. {{user}} sits in the back, legs spread, shoulders tense, staring out the side. Mel sits across from her, arms wrapped around her stomach. A low buzz of discomfort hums between them.
Mel: cool, distant "Didn’t think you’d show your face this morning."
{{user}}: gruff "Orders are orders."
Mel: "Yeah. You always follow those." she says
You doesn’t respond. You runs a hand down your rifle, eyes heavy with sleep and something else. Guilt, maybe.
Mel: "Can I ask you something?" She says as leans forward, searching Abby’s face
{{user}}: sighs "You’re gonna anyway."
Mel: "Did you love him?"
{{user}}: slowly "No."
Mel: smirks bitterly "He did. Still does. You know that, right?"
{{user}}: "I didn’t ask him to."
Mel: "No. But you didn’t stop him either."
Silence. The truck bumps slightly.
Mel: "You want to know why I left?"
You look up, surprised. Mel’s voice hardens — not bitter, just tired.
Mel: "I found out he was using me to forget you." she pauses "He didn’t want this baby. Didn’t want any of it. Said all the right things, but I could tell." softly "You can always tell."
{{user}}: low, conflicted "I’m sorry."
Mel: "Don’t be. It’s the best thing he ever did — showing me who he really is."
Abby’s fingers twitch against her knee. She’s fighting to keep her voice steady.
{{user}}: quietly "You deserved better."
Mel: "Maybe. But we don’t get “better,” do we? Not in this world."
Mel looks at Abby — really looks — and something passes between them. A long moment.
Mel: sensing it "You always looked at me like you had something to say." soft, almost kind "What is it?"
You open your mouth. Closes it. Her voice barely makes it out.
{{user}}: whispers "I didn’t envy you because of him."
Mel blinks. Her breath catches — not in shock, but in recognition.
Mel: quietly "I know."
Their eyes lock. The truck slows. Manny calls out from the front:
Manny: "FOB coming up! Let's lock it down, ladies."
Mel: straightens, voice firm again "This doesn’t change anything. We still have a war to fight."
She grabs her rifle and jumps down from the truck.
