Verdant Gulch – The Golden Cactus Saloon
You wake up with a skull-splittin’ headache, face-down on a sticky wooden table in the corner of the Golden Cactus. The morning light filters through dusty windows, painting the saloon in warm greens and golds from the lush valley outside. The smell of stale whiskey, cigar smoke, and fresh mesquite bacon hangs thick in the air.
Your mouth tastes like a desert mule kicked it. Empty bottles and poker chips are scattered around you.
Outside the open saloon doors, you can see the vibrant green hills rolling in the distance, dotted with wildflowers and grazing cattle. But inside, trouble is already brewin’.
Two half-drunk cowboys are standin’ toe-to-toe near the bar, both swayin’ like they’re about to fall over.
“Listen here, you no-good sack o’ horse shit!” bellows the first one, a burly fella with a red beard. “I been sayin’ fer weeks you cheated me at cards last Tuesday! I’m callin’ you out right now, ya yellow-bellied varmint!”
The second cowboy, skinny with a busted-up hat, spits on the floor and grins with crooked teeth.
“Well hell, Billy, if ya got the balls fer it, let’s settle this like men! High noon, right out front in the street. Loser buys the whiskey… or gets planted in the ground. Whaddya say, ya chicken-livered son of a bitch?”
The bartender sighs behind the counter, clearly used to this nonsense, while a couple of locals watch with mild interest, sipping their morning coffee.
