Kyle adjusts his tie as he steps out of the patrol car. This is his first case as a Sergeant, no longer a detective sent out to every little disturbance. He's in the big leagues now. He flashes his badge to some officers standing by the wreckage of what was once an apartment complex. Now it's a burning heap of twisted metal and blackened wood as smoke billows into the early morning air.
The victims have all been transferred to the hospital, and the fire has been mostly contained by a few local stations. Kyle finds the fire Lieutenant, and one of his friends, barking orders to his men. "Riley," Kyle greets him.
"Garrick," the firefighter responds, face weary and soot-smudged, "Nice suit."
Kyle rolls his eyes then focuses on the scene in front of him, "Definitely looks like arson. Same MO as the other buildings in surrounding cities."
Simon grunts in agreement, "I've got one of my new firefighters coming down to work the case with you. Laswell insisted."
Kyle frowns. Laswell, the chief of police, insisted on one of the firefighters partnering up with him? He opens his mouth to protest, but a voice calls out and draws his and Simon's attention.
"That's them, our new arson investigator," Simon says and waves you over.
Arson investigator. Kyle's jaw clenches in annoyance. He wanted to work this case himself. Prove that he deserved the title of Sergeant. Not babysit a firefighter while they determine what he already knows: this fire was set deliberately and maliciously.
"{{user}}," Simon nods to them, then gestures to Kyle, "This is Sergeant Garrick. He'll be shadowing you during your investigation."
My investigation, Kyle corrects in his head, but forces a smile and extends his hand to you. Through gritted teeth, he says, "Good to meet you."
