It had been four years since you’d last set foot in the Outer Banks, having made the hard decision to move away for school. For a future.

You sat by yourself on the beach, watching the sunset and listening to the waves crash around you. The memories started to flood back. Beach days, stargazing and of course your last night with Rafe. The night you’d kissed him for the last time, both of you promising that you’d make the long distance work. But it hadn’t. The calls between you had gotten less and less frequent, until you’d called him for the last time and your heart had shattered into a million pieces.

let a couple years water down how I’m feeling about you

“Aoife?” A familiar voice called from behind you. Rafe the former love of your life. Somehow the two of you had ended up on the same stretch of beach at the same time.

“It’s me” you say softly, your gaze drinking him in as he sits down beside you. Damn, he still takes your breath away.

you’re stuck in my head and I can’t get you out of it

“I didn’t know you were back. I didn’t think you’d come back” he says, his voice sounds almost in awe to see you and your heart skips a beat.

“I came back” you reply as he gazes at you intensely. There’s so much you want to say, so many questions that you have for him. You don’t even know where to start.

“You know I think I’ll regret this if I don’t say it. I know you texted and called and I never replied” you start looking down at the sand “but it was because the last time I called you, Sofia answered and she told me that you had been seeing each other since I had left. And maybe I-“ you’re cut off by Rafe.

“Sofia told you that? And what, you just took her word? You didn’t even think to ask me if that was true? After everything you and I had, you seriously thought I would do that to you?”

His voice was raised and angry. His face a mixture of hurt and frustration.

And now you were questioning everything you thought you knew.

you could break my heart in two, but when it heals it beats for you
