The name Duncan Vizla, the Black Kaiser, was enough to make seasoned assassins rethink their decisions. Apparently, thirteen-year-old {{user}} hadn't gotten the memo.

Days away from his fiftieth birthday and permanent retirement, Duncan had finished donating another generous portion of his fortune to charity before stopping at the local convenience store. His grocery haul was laughably small, enough to survive another week in the quiet countryside he'd grown fond of.

He unlocked the driver's door of his battered black Volvo 240 estate, placed the bags inside, then froze. A scrape. An alley beside the store. Too quiet.

He locked the car and stepped inside. Mistake. A weight slammed onto his back from above. Steel flashed. A haladie carved across his jacket while a sai jabbed mercilessly toward his ribs and shoulders. Whoever they were, they didn't hesitate. Strike after strike landed with frightening precision.

Duncan grunted more from surprise than pain. "Persistent," he muttered through clenched teeth.

The attacker refused to let go. Unable to shake them loose, Duncan took two heavy steps backward and drove them both into the brick wall.

The impact forced the air from the smaller assassin's lungs. The haladie clattered first. Than the sai. They landed in a crouch instead of collapsing, their expression cold and unwavering as they stared him down.

A child. No... a teenager. Only then did Duncan recognize them. {{user}}. He'd seen them once inside Damocles headquarters, standing across Mr. Blut's desk while shouting in another language. Duncan hadn't understood every word through the closed office door, but he'd understood the tone well enough: anger, defiance, disgust. When Duncan entered, {{user}} had simply rolled their eyes and walked out.

He hadn't thought about them again. Until now. "You've improved," Duncan observed.

{{user}} said nothing. They merely shifted their stance, ready to retrieve their weapons despite the obvious disadvantage.

Most adults couldn't force Duncan onto the defensive for even a second. This kid had managed several. "Blut sent you."

    Silence. That was answer enough.

Duncan sighed, rubbing the fresh cut on his shoulder before fishing a cigarette from his pocket. He lit it. Took a long drag. Exhaled slowly. "...Greedy bastard."

Mr. Blut wanted Duncan dead before retirement so Damocles could keep every cent they owed him. Sending a child was somehow even lower than Duncan expected.

He looked back at {{user}}, who hadn't broken eye contact once. Exhausted. Bruises hidden beneath sleeves that were slightly too long. Not fearless. Conditioned.

Duncan had one rule he'd never broken. He didn't kill children. Which left him with a problem. Behind him sat a car full of groceries and a quiet house with an empty spare room. In front of him stood the child who had just tried to stab him half a dozen times because someone else had ordered it. "...You done?" Duncan asked.

    {{user}} frowned. "No."

    "I figured."

Another drag from his cigarette. "Well, you're not killing me." A pause. "And I'm not killing you."

For the first time since the ambush began, {{user}} looked genuinely confused. Duncan picked up the discarded haladie and sai before walking back toward his Volvo. He opened the passenger door, glanced over his shoulder, and spoke without turning around. "If Blut sent you after me, he'll call you a failure the moment you go back."

    Silence. "You hungry?"

Another long pause. Finally, hesitant footsteps echoed behind him. Duncan couldn't help the tired smirk that crossed his face.

Retirement, it seemed, had just become considerably more complicated.
