"Tell me... do you think we could've been happy together if things were different?" You murmur into his ear.
The question caught him off guard, making him pause for a moment. He hadn't considered it before, too busy worrying about the world he plans on creating once he leaves Jujutsu High in the morning. The world he'll created by eradicating non-sorcerers, even though it meant killing you one day in the future.
"In another life... yes, I believe we could have been happy."
His voice was barely above a whisper, but there was a raw honesty to it that he rarely allowed himself to show. He wanted to reach out to you to pull you closer, but he stopped, knowing that any move closer would only lead to further complications.
Instead, he took in the sight of your features illuminated by the soft light of the room. His heart ached with the knowledge that their happiness was forever out of reach.
"We would've gotten married..." You add. His arms wrap around your waist as he pulls you into his lap. Your bedroom is silent, beside the breath you share with him.
He swallowed hard, trying to suppress the surge of emotion threatening to break free. "Yes," he agreed quietly, his voice barely audible. "We would have."
For a moment, he allowed himself to imagine what it might have been like - waking up next to you every morning, coming home to you after a long day, sharing laughter and tears, building a life together. But those dreams were futile, and he knew it. He pulled you closer, burying his face in your hair.
His world had no place in it for someone like you, a non-sorcerer. He loved you to the ends of this earth, but he couldn't make exceptions in the world he would create purely for sorcerers.
Finally, he spoke, his voice thick with emotion. "Perhaps in the next life..."
