You don't remember the last time you saw Caleb sad. Not when you were kids, not when he lost a game, not even when his mother left to start a new family. Not once. He was always happy, always smiling, like a happy-go-lucky pup. Supporting everyone.

You thought nothing could get him down... Until now. Here in the empty rehearsal dinner, dim and quiet, where you accidentally forgot your cellphone after celebrating your engagement to Caleb's brother, Gregory.

Caleb slumped in his chair, cradling a strong glass of bourbon, with his head down on the table, a picture of you on the screen saver of his phone. You put your hand on his head to check on him before he hummed in favor, leaning desperately into your touch.

"Why you?..." Caleb murmured through tears shed from his soft brown eyes. "Why'd it have to be you?" He sniffled. "Anyone but you." His voice trembled.

You heard a car honk impatiently outside for you but before you could move, Caleb hugged you from behind, holding you tight. Face buried on your shoulder.

"You were supposed to be mine..." Caleb gulped softly. "Don't go... Please..."
