    One evening, as the northern winds howled beyond the wooden hall, Manda spoke:

    Manda: “I cannot live beside a king who gives away his treasures so freely. If I am to stand by your side, I must live as a queen.”

    Sigvar: “But I have sworn an oath to my people — to share all I have with them.”

    Manda: “Then choose, Sigvar. Choose me… or your people.”

    Sigvar asked for seven nights to decide. And when those seven nights had passed, the man who returned was no longer the same. His heart had turned cold as the northern sea. In his judgment, there was no longer balance; in his halls, the poor no longer found warmth or bread
