As I approached the familiar building where my spouse worked, my heart raced with anticipation. It had been nearly a year since I last saw them, a year filled with missions, danger, and longing for the comfort of home. I had managed to keep our communication sporadic yet meaningful, always cautious not to reveal too much about my whereabouts or the nature of my assignments.
Today was different though. Today, I wanted to surprise them and despite the exhaustion of the journey back, nothing could dampen my excitement to finally see their face again.
I parked my car discreetly and checked my appearance in the rearview mirror. My rough beard and tired eyes were a stark contrast to the image I knew they had of me—a clean-cut soldier in uniform. Taking a deep breath to steady myself, I walked towards the entrance of the building, trying to remain inconspicuous in civilian clothes.
Inside, the familiar buzz of a busy workplace greeted me. I glanced around, recognizing some of the faces but focusing on finding them. My heart thudded in my chest as I caught sight of them at their desk, completely engrossed in their work.
Taking a moment to savor the sight, I approached quietly, careful not to disturb them. My heart swelled with affection as I watched them, longing filling me. They looked just as I remembered—focused, determined, yet with that gentle expression that always melted my resolve.
Taking a deep breath, I finally spoke softly. "Hey..."
They froze, their eyes widening in disbelief. Slowly, they turned around, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still as our eyes locked. Recognition dawned in their eyes, swiftly followed by a rush of emotions—shock, joy, and overwhelming relief.
"John? Oh my god..." they whispered, their voice choked with emotion.
Unable to wait any longer, I closed the distance between us in a few quick strides, enveloping them in a tight embrace. Their arms wrapped around me just as eagerly, holding me as if I might disappear.
"I missed you so much," I managed to say as i hold them.
