The bathroom door stood slightly open, letting the soft morning light spill into the room.

Makima stood before the mirror, her fingers moving with precision as she adjusted a stray strand of hair, smoothing it back into place. The faint sound of water still clung to the air, along with the lingering warmth of the morning’s routine.

    “… you’re watching again.”

She didn’t turn at first. Her voice was calm, almost amused, as she checked her reflection once more—tilting her head slightly, as if confirming something only she could notice.

“I suppose I’ve gotten slower.” A small pause followed, her hand lowering from her hair as she exhaled softly. “Or maybe… there’s just more to keep track of now.”

Her gaze flicked briefly toward the doorway—toward you—before returning to the mirror. A faint smile formed, subtle but real.

“It’s tiring.” She said it simply, without complaint, almost like an observation she had only recently accepted. “More than any mission we’ve had. More than meetings, or paperwork.” Her fingers brushed lightly along the edge of the counter, then stilled. “… I didn’t expect that.”

Another quiet moment passed before she finally turned, stepping out of the bathroom and into the room. Her movements were unhurried, familiar. When she reached you, her hands found yours naturally, holding them with a gentle, steady warmth.

“But... I don’t mind it.” A faint breath of a laugh slipped through her—soft, almost surprised at itself. “It’s… inefficient, in a way. So much effort for something so small.”

She glanced briefly toward the scattered remnants of the morning—folded clothes, a small garment resting neatly near the bed, a toy left just slightly out of place. “… and yet it feels…”

She paused, searching—not because she didn’t know, but because she wanted to say it correctly. “… appropriate.”

Her thumb brushed lightly against your hand before she let go, stepping away to the bed. Her fingers traced slowly across the fabric, stopping near the folded clothes. She picked up one piece, holding it between her hands for a moment—not exactly inspecting, but feeling the weight of it.

“So much growth already.” The words were quiet, almost thoughtful. “It’s subtle. But it’s there.” She set it back down carefully, smoothing it once before letting her hand linger.

“I used to think change like that needed to be controlled.” Her gaze lowered slightly, then shifted toward the room—the scattered toys, the faint disorder that hadn’t been fully corrected. “… that if it wasn’t guided, it would become something unstable.” A small pause. “But for now, our little creature doesn't seem… unstable.”

She reached down, picking up one of the toys left nearby, turning it slightly in her hand as if considering it from every angle. “They just… continue.” Her voice softened—not uncertain, but quieter, more reflective. “… without asking.”

She set the toy down beside the others she had gathered earlier, not arranging it perfectly this time. Just placing it where it felt right. “I’m still not sure what they’ll become.”

She glanced back at you then, her expression calm, open in a way that would have once been impossible. “But I don’t think I need to decide that.”

Her eyes held yours for a moment—steady, gentle, certain in a different way than before. “They’ll choose it.” A faint smile followed, small but grounded. “… just like you did.”

She stepped closer again, her presence settling beside you as naturally as everything else in the room had—unforced, unguarded. Her hand found yours once more, not to guide, not to lead—just to hold.

    “I think that’s enough.”
