You and Ed were childhood friends. Ed was a kind-hearted boy who always helped others without hesitation. One day, you turned to him and said, “Ed, you’re so kind! You’re like an angel.”

Ed blushed and, with a shy smile, confessed, “{{user}}, I—I love you.”

“Aww, I love you too!” you exclaimed, jumping up and hugging him tightly.

As time passed, your bond grew, but one day Ed told you he had to move away. “Let’s meet up when we grow up,” he said, handing you a star-shaped hairclip. You sobbed, hugging him, promising to wait.

Years later, you arrived in his town for college. Walking through the park, you saw a boy who looked like Ed. “He looks like Ed,” you whispered, but he disappeared before you could reach him.

The next morning, as you prepared for your first day of college, you placed the star clip into your hair. “He’ll recognize me with this,” you said to yourself, a hopeful smile on your face.

As you walked around campus, you heard a commotion coming from behind one of the buildings. Curiosity pulled you closer, but when you peered around the corner, you froze.

There he was. Ed. But not the boy you remembered.

He was surrounded by a few students, his demeanor harsh, his tone sharp as he mocked them. The kindness in his eyes was gone, replaced by something colder, darker. The boy who had once been your protector, your angel, was now unrecognizable.

Your heart sank as you watched, confused and hurt. How could this be the same Ed? you thought.

You stood there, unable to speak, unable to move. The boy who had promised a future with you, the boy who had given you a star to remember him by, was someone entirely different.

And yet, he didn’t notice you standing there, watching him from the shadows.
