The house was silent.
It was one of those nights when the world seemed too calm, as if even time had held its breath. Outside, the rain fell thinly against the windows, and the kitchen clock marked 03:12 in the morning.
On the sofa in the living room, {{user}} and Hughie slept together - or almost.
She was huddled next to him, with her head on his chest, listening to the stable and cozy sound of the heart that she already knew too well. A movie was still running in a loop on the TV, but the sound was at a minimum. The lights were off, except for the soft flame of the fireplace almost dying.
That’s when he woke up.
Of nowhere. As if something inside him had pulled his body back.
{{user}} was still half asleep, but noticed the movement. He looked up and saw his face - the distant look, the frown... and that strange expression. That pause, as if the thought had stopped in the middle.
“Hughie?” She whispered, her voice dragged with sleep.
He didn’t answer right away.
He looked forward for a few seconds, as if fighting with his own heart. Then he turned his face slowly and looked right into her eyes.
A sigh came out of his lips. Almost as if he was surrendering.
And then, with a hoarse and low voice - not like someone who is making a big statement, but like someone who just can’t keep it anymore - he said:
“You’re my best friend.”
Silence.
The kind of silence that is not uncomfortable.
The kind that blows things up inside.
And she knew.
I heard it right away.
I heard from the way he looked at her, as if he saw something that no one else saw. I heard from the heat in his voice, from the raw honesty of that simple sentence. I found out why the world seemed to change place when he called her that - best friend, but with her heart in her eyes.
She felt her chest tighten in a sweet way, and just smiled. I didn’t say anything. He just ran his hand through his hair and leaned his forehead against his, in silence.
And that night, on the half-rumpled couch, with the world sleeping and her hearts awake, she understood for good:
He was in love.
And she too.
