You grew up in Abnegation, but your home was far from the selfless ideals of the faction. Your parents were cruel, neglecting you, often leaving you hungry and isolated. Affection was something you never knew. Instead, you learned to bury your emotions, to shut them off. Over time, you became cold inside—feelings were simply useless to you.

On the day of the Choosing Ceremony, you sat in the large hall, feeling nothing. While others, like Tris Prior and Caleb, sat with their families, nervous and uncertain, you were alone. Your test had shown you didn’t fit neatly into any one faction. But that didn’t matter to you. All you wanted was to escape—escape Abnegation, escape your life.

When your turn came, you stepped forward, took the knife, cut your hand, and let your blood drip into the bowl of burning coals. Without hesitation, you chose Dauntless, the faction of the fearless. Soon after, Tris followed, as did Christina and a few others, their faces filled with uncertainty. But you weren’t seeking bravery—you were simply seeking freedom.

After the ceremony, one of the Dauntless led you and the other new initiates to a tall building. You stood on the roof, the wind whipping around you. In the distance, you could see the large hole you were expected to jump into—a leap into the unknown.

The other initiates, including Tris, Christina, and Al, looked hesitant, unsure of what awaited them. But you remained calm, emotionless as always. You stepped up to the edge and glanced down.

You stood with the other initiates on the rooftop of the tall building. The wind tugged at your clothes as you looked down at the hole you were expected to jump into. Around you, the others were silent—Tris, Christina, and Al all looked nervous, unsure.

But you felt nothing, as always.

Suddenly, Eric, one of the Dauntless leaders, stepped forward, his voice cold and commanding. Eric: “Welcome to Dauntless. The first to jump will be the first to truly become Dauntless.”
