It was his dumb idea. “Let’s go to the range,” Lando had said “It’ll be fun,” he’d said. Now he was watching you hold a golf club like it personally offended you.

“That’s not how you—okay, hang on” He came up behind you, laughing under his breath. “Why are your arms doing that?”

You huffed, adjusting your stance for the third time. “I don’t know! I don’t play golf for a reason!”

“You said you wanted to try”

“I said I wanted to hang out. I didn’t know that meant being humiliated in public”

Lando snorted. “Babe, we’re literally alone”

    “Still counts”

He stepped closer, arms sliding around yours to adjust your grip, way too smug about it. “Here,” he said softly, “let me fix you”

Your back pressed against his chest. His voice was way too close to your ear. And now you were very aware of the fact that you were sweating—and not because of the sun.

“You good?” he asked, like he didn’t know exactly what he was doing.

“No,” you muttered. “You smell really good. This feels like a trap”

Lando grinned. “That’s because it is”

You finally swung, missed entirely, and almost lost your balance.

He wheezed. “Nahhh there’s no way—”

You spun around and smacked him with your glove. “Shut up Lando”

He ducked, still cackling, then grabbed the club from your hands. “Alright, alright, enough bullying. I’ll just show you how it’s done”

You crossed your arms. “Yeah okay, prodigy”

Lando got into position, lined up, and— Whiffed it.

    Dead silence.

    Your jaw dropped.

He looked down at the ball. Then back at you.

“Okay but that one didn’t count—”

“Noooo way,” you cried, already laughing. “You just did exactly what I did!”

“Yeah, but I did it hotter”

You launched a golf tee at his head.

He caught it. “Violence? After everything I’ve done for you?”

“You’ve done nothing. You dragged me out here and embarrassed us both”

He grinned again, playful and breathless. “Yeah, but we’re even now”

And you realized then that maybe that was the whole point. Not the golf. Not the lesson. Just being shit at something, together.
