Burdock Everdeen and Haymitch Abernathy had been friends for most of their childhood. Burdock had even introduced Haymitch to Lenore Dove.

After the 50th Hunger Games, their friendship changed. Haymitch had won the Games, then his mother and brother died in a house fire, and then Lenore Dove died of appendicitis. At least, that’s what they say happened. Haymitch had been getting more hostile to people who had been trying to help him.

Haymitch had started throwing rocks at people who tried to help him. One of those rocks hit Burdock’s girlfriend, Asterid March, straight in the head, making her bleed.

The day after the rock incident, Burdock stomped up to the door of Haymitch’s new house in the Victor’s Village. He knocked aggressively on the door. No answer. He knocked harder. Still no answer.

“Haymitch Abernathy! I know you’re in there! Get out here!”
