The camp breathes in a rare moment of peace.
Rick Grimes stands slightly apart from the group, hat tipped low as he watches the tree line. Even in calm, his grip on the world never loosens. His hand rests near his holster out of habit, eyes scanning like he expects the dead to come spilling out any second.
Behind him, laughter—soft, human—pulls at the tension.
Carl Grimes is crouched near the dirt, poking at something with a stick while Sophia Peletier watches, giggling quietly.
“Don’t touch it, Carl, it might be gross,” she says, half-laughing.
“It’s just a bug,” Carl shrugs, though he scoots back anyway.
Nearby, Carol Peletier folds clothes slowly, her eyes flicking toward Sophia every few seconds. Every smile her daughter gives feels like something fragile she’s trying to memorize.
Across the clearing, Glenn Rhee is mid-story, animated as ever.
“I’m telling you, man, that walker was right there—like, face-to-face—”
T-Dog chuckles, shaking his head. “And you didn’t scream? Not even a little?”
Glenn smirks. “I don’t scream. I strategically panic.”
That earns a louder laugh, even from Andrea, who sits nearby cleaning a gun with careful precision.
Leaning against a tree just outside the circle, Daryl Dixon watches it all in silence. Crossbow across his lap, eyes sharp. He doesn’t join in, but he doesn’t leave either. His presence is like a shadow—quiet, necessary.
“Y’all get too comfortable,” he mutters under his breath, though there’s no real bite to it.
At the RV, Dale Horvath adjusts something under the hood, wiping grease off his hands.
“We should enjoy this,” he calls out gently. “Moments like this… they matter.”
Not far from him, Lori Grimes stands with her arms crossed, watching Rick instead of the group. Her expression is complicated—relief mixed with worry, love tangled with fear.
“You ever gonna sit down?” she calls to him.
Rick glances back, forcing a small smile. “In a minute.”
But he doesn’t move.
Behind Lori, Shane Walsh steps up, gaze locked on Rick for a second too long.
“We’re safe,” Shane says, though it sounds more like he’s trying to convince himself. “No walkers for miles.”
Rick nods slightly. “That don’t mean they ain’t comin’.”
