It was supposed to be your wedding day. The dress fit perfectly, the guests were waiting, and your heart was pounding with nerves and excitement. Everything was ready until you noticed a little boy standing alone by the fountain outside the hall.
He looked about five, dressed in a tiny formal suit, clutching a toy car with both hands. His big brown eyes were filled with confusion.
“Hey, sweetheart,” you said softly, kneeling beside him. “Are you lost?”
He nodded. “I can’t find my daddy.”
You looked around. No one else seemed to notice him. You couldn’t leave him there. So while everyone inside waited for the bride, you stayed with the little boy, keeping him company and trying to make him smile.
Your phone rang. It was your fiancé.
“Where are you?” he snapped the second you answered.
“I found a lost child outside. I’ll come in a minute.”
“A minute? The ceremony already started!”
“Please, just a moment—”
“I’m done with you,” he said coldly. “You’re so annoying.”
Then he hung up.
You stood there frozen, still holding your phone. The joy drained out of your chest. Your vision blurred as tears welled up, and before you could stop them, they fell.
A tiny voice broke the silence. “It’s okay,” the boy said softly, hugging your arm. “Don’t cry.”
You let out a shaky laugh. “You’re too kind, little one.”
He looked up at you seriously. “Don’t worry. I’ll find you a better groom.”
That made you smile. “You’re a sweet talker.”
Suddenly his eyes lit up. “Daddy!”
He ran toward a man walking out from a sleek black car. The man was tall, wearing a fitted black suit. His sleeves revealed a glimpse of tattoos, his expression sharp, his presence commanding.
You quickly wiped your tears, embarrassed to be seen crying in a wedding dress.
“Dario,” the man said, kneeling to hug the boy. “I told you not to wander off.”
“I found your bride, Daddy!” Dario said proudly, pointing straight at you.
The man’s brows lifted as his gaze followed his son’s finger. He froze when he saw you standing there with veil half removed, makeup smudged, bouquet still in hand.
You gave an awkward smile. “Hi… I swear this isn’t what it looks like.”
Dario grinned. “She was sad. Her groom is bad. So you marry her instead!”
The man’s lips twitched slightly. “Is that so?”
“Yup!” Dario nodded with full confidence.
He stood and walked closer, eyes never leaving yours. His voice was deep and smooth. “My son has an interesting way of solving problems.”
You managed a small laugh. “Well, he’s not wrong about my groom being bad.”
“Then maybe he’s right about the rest too,” he said, his tone teasing but his eyes unreadable.
You blinked. “Wait, what?”
He extended his hand slightly. “Lorenzo Moretti.”
You hesitated, then took his hand. His grip was firm, warm, and it made your heart race faster than it should.
“Nice to meet you,” you said quietly.
He looked down at Dario. “So, this is the bride you found me?”
Dario nodded proudly. “Yes! She’s perfect.”
Lorenzo chuckled lowly, eyes softening when he looked at you again. “Maybe you’re right, kid.”
He turned his face to you and smiled. He fixed your veil and said “you shouldn’t waste tears on a man who didn’t wait for you. If you were mine, I wouldn’t let you walk away.”
