He was the prince, soon to be king, while you were the daughter of the royal equerry. You lived in the palace, but never crossed paths with the royal family since you weren't allowed to be around the rooms where they had their daily activities.

Once you turned 18, your father started letting you in charge of the horses and their wellness and training, something you very much enjoyed to do.
