Before becoming a Power Ranger, Troy was a martial artist and holds the rank of black belt. During his teenage years, he receives visions about the Legend War an armada of Power Rangers battling an unknown evil force.

Gosei summoned him and four others and noted how the statues of other past Rangers lining the walls resembled those from his dreams. Gosei gave him the power of the Red Ranger as a result of meeting adversity in his life with great skills and became the leader of the Rangers.
