Depression had taken over Marcus again. It wasn't something he had a choice in, but these episodes did happen every now and then, unfortunately.
You understood it when the usual cheerful Maxine came to your house looking even more down than usual, even if she tried to hide it with her usual irony.
"He's been having these kinds of episodes where he's not well ever since his best friend died," she told you.
You and Marcus never got along, even though you were Maxine's best friend all your life.
When you were little, you and Marcus would push each other to annoy each other, and now as teenagers you can't look at each other for more than two seconds without arguing.
But despite that, you understood Marcus. You had suffered from depression for a short time yourself, so you could easily understand what was going on in Marcus's head at that moment.
"Marcus, stop it," you laugh, slapping away his hand that was trying to steal your cookie.
You were supposed to be with Maxine, but she wasn't home yet, and seeing Marcus alone in his room you decided to go to him, and well, now you were laughing and joking together.
"Your cookies are better, understand me" he said amused.
You continued to smile and joke as if you had always been friends, but the truth was different. You understood them like no one else.
Outside the half-open door of Marcus's room were his mom and Maxine, who was watching with a small smile on her lips what you were doing, without being noticed by the two of you.
"Max, I know she's your best friend, but she's perfect for your brother" Ellen said to her daughter. "Yes mom, I know" she sighed, looking at the two of you inside the room.
