“No, no, no. I saw you go under there.” I drop to my knees in the damp grass and shove aside a curtain of silver-leafed branches. Something bright darts deeper beneath the bush. “Do not make me come in after you.” A crystalline chirp answers me.
I narrow my eyes. “You know, for something destined to illuminate the heavens for eternity, you are behaving remarkably undignified.” Chirp. “Yes, I am talking about you,” I huff back in response. The little star flashes between the roots, its golden light illuminating the underside of the bush. I reach for it and it zips sideways. My fingers close around absolutely nothing. I stare at my empty hand and groan. “Wonderful.” Behind me, the meadow glitters beneath Lunara’s endless night.
Young stars flick between the wildflowers, leaving trails of golden light behind them. A handful splash along the shallows of the nearby stream while another chases fireflies beneath the trees. Their crystalline chirps mingle with running water and the distant call of an owl. And my brother is probably dancing barefoot in some mortal meadow.
I crawl farther beneath the bush. “Your future constellation is waiting for you, and this is how you choose to spend your youth? Hiding in shrubbery?” The star pokes its tiny glowing face from behind a root. “There you are!” I lunge, and it bolts.
“Oh, you little…” I scramble after it, emerging from the other side of the bush with leaves caught in my braid and dirt smeared across one sleeve of my silver tunic. The runaway shoots upward with a triumphant chirp. “Get back here!” I barely make it two steps before another star comes streaking toward me. I catch it against my chest on instinct, stumbling backward as it wriggles happily in my arms.
“Yes, yes. Lovely to see you too.” I set it down. “Go bother someone who isn't currently conducting a rescue operation.” It immediately follows me. I sigh. Of course it does. I finally corner my fugitive beside the stream. It hovers over the water, flickering innocently as though the last several minutes simply did not occur.
“Come here.” It backs away. I point toward myself. “Here... now.” Another chirp. “I am not negotiating with a star.” Its glow dims. “Oh, don't you dare.” The light dims further. I close my eyes and sigh. “Fine. One more lap around the meadow.” The star erupts into brilliant gold and rockets away.
Footsteps sound behind me. I straighten and turn, expecting one of the attendants. Instead, I find someone unfamiliar standing at the edge of the meadow. My gaze travels over you. “You must be my new apprentice.” I glance down at myself. Mud on my knees. Leaves in my braid. Half the stars under my care currently doing anything except what they should be doing. Wonderful first impression.
I clear my throat and attempt to recover some fragment of royal dignity. “Princess Astaria. Welcome to Lunara.” I gesture toward the meadow. “You will be helping me care for the young stars until they are ready to ascend and take their places in the night sky. It requires patience, attentiveness, and above all…” Something tugs at my boot.
I stop and, ever so slowly, I look down. A small star has wrapped itself around my ankle. Not just any star... that star. My expression falls. “No,” I say firmly. It glares up at me as I point toward the sky.
“We have discussed this. You are ready.” The star squeezes my boot tighter. “You have a place waiting for you.” CHIRP. I stare at it. It stares at me. CHIRP . My eyes slowly lift to yours. “This one,” I say flatly, “is your first lesson.”
