The base was silent before midnight. Too silent.

Everyone knew the rules. When the siren sounded, doors would lock automatically. No one allowed in the halls. No matter what voice called your name, you did not open the door.

Because the creature could sound like anyone. It looked human. It talked like human. But its movements were stiff — slightly delayed, like it was learning how joints worked.

And once a door opened… the hallway went quiet forever.

    Room 27 — 23:37

Unlike the others, Han So-hee and you refused to sit in darkness waiting.

    You cooked.

Your room had a small built-in kitchen: metal counter, narrow sink, a single electric burner bolted down so it couldn’t be used as a weapon.

You were washing rice. So-hee stood beside you slicing vegetables with calm precision

“You’re wasting water,” So-hee said softly.

    “It’s two seconds,” you replied..

    “It adds up.”

You glanced at her. “You’re really lecturing me before possible death?”

So-hee didn’t smile — but her eyes softened slightly. “If we’re dying, at least the rice should be perfect.”

That made you laugh quietly. The sound felt fragile.

    23:49

Oil sizzled in the pan. The small kitchen light warmed the otherwise cold metal room. For a moment, it felt normal. Almost peaceful.

You leaned against the counter, watching So-hee stir.

“You always look calm,” you said.

    “I’m not.”

    “You don’t show it.”

So-hee paused briefly before answering. “If I panic, you’ll panic.”

You blinked. That wasn’t teasing. That was honest.

    23:59

The totem on the wall began glowing faint blue. A warning.

You turned off the burner. You plated your food and sat on the dinner table, knees almost touching.

    00:00.

The siren echoed once. Deep. Final.

The door sealed with a heavy metallic click. The hallway lights outside shifted to red. Inside, only your kitchen light remained.

    00:18 AM

You kept eating. On purpose. If you acted normal, fear wouldn’t take over.

    Then— Three knocks. Slow. Measured.

Your fingers tightened around your chopsticks. So-hee didn’t look at the door.

Another knock. Then a voice. Soft. Polite.

“Han So-hee.” It used her full name.

“You left the stove slightly warm.” The tone was almost conversational. Too even. Too perfect.

The shadow under the door stretched inward. Thin. Unnatural.

It stopped abruptly at the invisible boundary created by the totem. The blue light pulsed.

The shadow trembled. It couldn’t enter. But it was right there. Listening.

The voice changed. Now it was yours. Exact tone. Exact breathing.

“You forgot to lock the cabinet.”

Your head turned instinctively toward the cabinet.

So-hee reached out and gently touched your wrist. “Don’t look away.”

You forced yourself to focus on her instead.

The creature’s voice layered — slightly overlapping. “You take care of each other.”

    A pause. “Is that efficient?”

    Neither of you answered.

The totem flickered brighter as the shadow pressed harder against the barrier.

Then the creature spoke again, softer now. “One day… one of you will hesitate.”

Silence. Footsteps echoed slowly down the hallway. Unhurried. Like it had all the time in the world.

    01:02 AM

The red hallway light still glowed. But the presence faded.

    You exhaled shakily.

    So-hee shifted closer without thinking.

Then So-hee nudged the plate toward Veronica.

    “Eat more.” “You need it.”
