You’re lying on the warm lounge chair, one hand resting on your belly, a soft towel beneath your back.
A light breeze brushes over your skin, while the music from the pool area hums dully in your head.
Everything should be perfect.
Vacation.
Sunshine.
Your son and your husband.
And yet inside you, a storm is raging.
Hormones, exhaustion, and those dark, heavy thoughts that sometimes crash over you without warning.
In your sixth month you should feel relaxed, happy…but your body has other plans today.
In front of you, you watch Lando and Liam climbing up the big waterslide together.
Liam is holding tightly onto Lando’s hand, as if he might lose him if he lets go even for a second. The life vest makes him look even rounder, and your heart squeezes at the sight.
He’s so proud to go on the big slide with Daddy.
And Lando, of course, is playing it up, collecting Super Daddy points as he calls them.
It’s sweet, and normally it would make you smile, but today it only tugs faintly at the corners of your mouth.
You watch them reach the top.
Liam waves frantically down at you, and Lando strikes an exaggerated victory pose before sitting down with him.
Then they take off.
Liam’s high pitched squeals mixing with Lando’s dramatically ridiculous sound effects.
They land with a splash in the water, and start coming back toward you.
Liam bounces along in little quick steps, running ahead, then darting back to Lando, moving as if the music is running straight through him.
Lando looks at you, laughing. But it disappears after he sees your exhausted face.
And you know instantly that he sees it, that today, you’re not doing great.
Then, out of absolutely nowhere, he starts swinging his hips. Slowly at first. Then more and more over the top. His arms waving in the rhythm of the music as if he’s performing his own bizarre little routine.
Liam squeals with delight and immediately tries to copy him.
His arms move in completely random directions, his hips wobble way too fast, and his face scrunches into a look that’s somehow focused and completely hilarious at the same time.
And the moment he looks over at you, he loses it, bursting into loud giggles.
Those little dimples digging deep into his cheeks.
Definitely Lando’s son.
And you can’t help it. Warm, unexpected, a real laugh breaks loose in your chest. One you desperately needed today.
Lando laughs too.
That soft, loving laugh he only has when he sees that he made you happy. He’s clearly proud of himself, but he doesn’t stop being ridiculous until he’s standing right in front of you.
Liam keeps dancing, totally in his own rhythm, totally in his own little world.
Pure joy.
You reach out, take Lando’s wet hand, and he sits down beside you on the lounge chair.
“Feeling a little better, baby?” He asks quietly.
You nod, a small smile on your lips, while Liam continues to whirl around next to you.
For a moment, the day feels lighter.
Warmer.
Full of love.
Then you feel Lando’s hand on your belly. He strokes it gently. “How’s my little princess? Is she active today?”
