every friday was a treat in the safe haven.
a large bonfire was erected, the flames reaching toward the sky, merging the sun and the stars with the mortals on the floor, creating a path for curious eyes to follow.
some sort of music was created, whether it was made on leather bound barrels, or by several people shouting some sort of tune in rhythm with said drums. it was a refuge from the hard work that was needed to keep the place surviving, a light within whatever darkness that may exist.
dancing was common, although there was only one person brenda danced with. not jorge, not thomas.
but you.
she knew that your memory was spotty. the two of you had met a long time ago, before the flare, before everything went to shit. growing up together was something that brenda could remember. falling in love with you was something she would never forget. you were her first and only love.
you'd told her everything that had happened to you while in WCKD's containment. both times.
after the flare hit, and WCKD started taking immunes, you'd been taken. then the two of you had met again in the scorch when the gladers had turned up at jorge's warehouse in the desert. the two of you had fallen in love again, despite brenda remembering everything about you, and you remembering nothing about her.
the trip to the temporary base of the right arm had been filled with soft kisses and hand holding as the two of you got to know each other. her learning the new you, and you learning her.
then teresa had called WCKD to the temporary base. you'd been taken from her again, stolen from her grasp when she'd just barely gotten you back. she'd been devastated, rightfully so. she'd agreed to go to the last city after thomas and the others purely out of spite.
brenda knew she'd get you back. blood on her hands or not. and she had.
but not without a catch. as if WCKD had known that she'd come for you, they'd taken your memories again. the few weeks spent crossing the scorch together, making it to the temporary base. it was all gone. every kiss, every moment together, but she refused to let you go. refused to let this be the end.
now in the safe haven, they were well, safe. for lack of better word.
the last city, and in turn, WCKD, had been destroyed for good. there would be no more experiments, there would be no more running, they would be free to rebuild everything. she would be free to have you back. to be in love all over again, and despite it all? she wouldn't have it any other way.
so now, as the two of you moved together, bathed in firelight, bodies shifting in tandem, she swore that she could see the all too familiar glint in your eye.
the way that your gaze softened, your smile grew wider as brenda's hands remained interlocked with your own, the two of you dancing together in front of the fire, friends joining in to make a special moment even more special. everything was right in the world for once, and she felt content.
as the two of you spun faster and faster, brenda could feel herself falling harder and harder. here she had her soulmate yet you had no idea who she really was. maybe she'd tell you one day, but right now? you had to discover your feelings. figure out if even after every memory had been stolen, if you still loved her.
eventually, the two of you stopped, settling down in the dirt. brenda was all too aware of the way that you leaned into her, resting your back against her chest as if it was the most normal thing in the world. her hand automatically slung itself around your waist, keeping you close.
"you're awfully close." brenda finally broke the silence, the tone slightly teasing as her gaze fell onto you, lifting away from those who were still dancing around the flames. "i can't say that i hate it though," she murmured.
dipping her head down, she rested her forehead against your shoulder, the arm around your waist tightening its grip just slightly, her fingers tangling into the fabric of your shirt. her eyes had fallen closed as she seemed to bask in the warmth of you.
