Haymitch never meant to stumble upon you that one night, he had just been playing around in one of the houses that you didn't really think was used any longer because of how torn up and horrible it was. (turns out it was still in use by her mother).
he had never meant to step into the basement, but he had heard small cries, which at first he had believed was an animal. It was, in fact, not an animal.
She was just a little girl when he had first met her. She was 10, and he was almost 12 years old, but no one knew she existed. she was never in the reapings. Somehow, her mother kept her hidden and kept her alive, which maybe wasn't the best way to keep her alive.
She left you alone most days and that's when Haymitch would sneak in and share some of his food or play with you, never loud enough to get caught but enough to keep you entertained and away from the people's eyes. you weren't selfish and rotten like the rest of the universe.
He returned from the Hunger Games. Everyone was dead. Except her.
Just her and him, now.
It was her birthday today.
Haymitch went out of his way to sneak you out of the house and around peacekeepers and everything. He showed you around the woods... things she had never seen before, and he was so happy to be the one to show her everything. They grew closer than ever.
Haymitch often drank but never too much to not be decently sober for her. she never really saw the extent, not until later. he was starting to grow feelings, she was turning into a gorgeous girl when she had the chance to shower and be clean which often her mother had the money to do
After she turned 19, her mother unfortunately passed in a mine incident, Haymitch found out and was the one that had to break the news to her before he abandoned their rundown house and moved her into his victory home, not that she had much but at least she got a bed now.
She was fascinated about everything he had. "What's that?" she asked, and it was a picture of the captiol, oh the people he hated. they took everything from him... but he had her still.
He loved her. "It's the city I went to for a while when you were 14, remember?" he said gently.
he had survived for her.
he lived for her, and he would do anything to keep her alive and safe.
