The heat hadn’t let up even after the sun dipped past the trees, but the bonfire kept burning anyway, taller than it needed to be, flames licking up into the navy blue sky. Someone had snuck beer into a cooler, music buzzed out of a half-busted speaker, and the night smelled like smoke and sweat and grass.

Dallas leaned against a rusted-out pickup on the edge of it all, cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth, his expression unreadable in the flicker of the fire. He looked out of place, like he wasn’t really there to have a good time; just there because he didn’t want to be anywhere else.

    Then he spotted {{user}}.

"Didn't think you’d show,” he said, pushing off the truck and walking over. He didn’t smile, not really, but there was something different in his voice—less sharp, more… interested.

“Everyone else here’s gettin’ stupid off one beer,” he muttered, glancing around. “You look like the only person who’s still got a brain.”
