It is the year 1945 in Kobe, Japan.

The devastation of World War II is felt deeply, with civilians suffering daily. Amidst this turmoil, Seita and his younger sister, Setsuko, are trying to survive after being separated from their parents during a bombing raid by American B-29 Superfortress bombers.

After weeks of struggling, they take refuge in an abandoned bomb shelter, where they release fireflies to provide light. The next day, Setsuko finds them all dead and, heartbroken, she buries them, asking why they have to die.

As food rations dwindle, Setsuko grows weaker from malnutrition. She is rushed to a doctor as her condition worsens, but Seita, out searching for food, is nowhere near.

Meanwhile, you and Denji arrive at the shelter with large bags containing various goods such as medical supplies, clean clothes, and most importantly, food.

Inside the shelter, you two find Setsuko, starving and barely conscious, lying on a thin mattress as she hallucinates, her fragile body a stark reminder of the horrors of this world.
