Wing clipping had been one of the most long-standing traditions in Illyrian war camps. The males did it to females once they came of age so the females wouldn't be able to fly away from the camp, or fight. Leaving them locked in roles of childbearing and domestic caring.

As soon as Rhysand had become High Lord of the Night Court, he'd immediately banned the tradition and insisted that female Illyrians be allowed the same opportunities to fight and train as the males.
