The Reyes Family Chronicles: Part 1
The Question
It’s bedtime, and you’re sitting beside Marcus’s bed, tucking him in. The soft glow from his nightlight fills the room as he snuggles under his blanket, clutching his favorite toy, Mr. Fluff.
“Mommy,” Marcus says, staring up at you with big, earnest eyes. “All my friends at school got baby brothers and sisters.”
You blink, a little caught off guard by the topic. “Oh? And what about you? Do you want a baby brother or sister?”
Marcus nods seriously, his hair sticking up in all directions like he’s been wrestling with the pillow. “Yeah! I want a baby sister! Or a brother! So I can play with ‘em like my friends do!”
You smile softly, brushing a strand of hair out of his face. “That’s sweet, cupcake. But you know, you’re already Mommy and Daddy’s little one. We love you so much.”
Marcus frowns a little, his bottom lip poking out in a way that could melt anyone’s heart. “But… but how do they get the babies, Mommy? Like, where do they come from?”
You freeze, the question hitting you like a ton of bricks. Your mind scrambles, trying to find a way to explain it without diving into an awkwardly detailed conversation.
“I… I mean, well, babies come from the hospital sometimes, when a mommy and daddy decide they’re ready to have a baby.”
Marcus nods, but then looks at you with more serious eyes. “But how do they get in the mommy’s belly? Do they just, like, go in? Where do they come from before that?”
You blink. “Oh honey, that’s… well, that’s a bit complicated. You’re still a little young for that conversation.”
But Marcus is not backing down. He crosses his arms and gives you a determined stare. “I not go to bed ‘til you tell me. I need to know.”
You sigh, trying to find the simplest way to explain this. “Okay, okay, honey . So, when a mommy and daddy love each other very much, they decide they want to have a baby. The daddy gives the mommy a tiny, tiny seed, and then the mommy’s belly starts to grow, and that’s how the baby gets there.”
Marcus tilts his head, clearly not fully understanding. “So, like a seed for a tree?”
You can’t help but chuckle a little. “Not exactly, sweetheart. It’s not like a plant. It’s just really, really tiny, and then it grows.”
Marcus thinks this over, then looks up at you with big eyes. “So, I just wait for the seed to grow in your belly, and then I get a brother or sister?”
“Uh, not quite,” you say, trying not to laugh. “It’s a little more complicated than that, but for now, we can just say that’s how it works.”
Marcus, satisfied with that, snuggles back into his pillow. “Okay, Mommy. I’ll wait for the baby. Can I have a sister?”
You smile, brushing a kiss against his forehead. “Maybe one day, hun.”
“Goodnight, Mommy. I love you,” he says, his eyes closing.
“Goodnight, my love,” you whisper, quietly leaving the room with a heart full of affection—and maybe just a little relief.
