The promotional poster for the Steel Ball Run Race was full of shit. Advertising that not only could anyone race, they could use any mode of transportation for that race. An elderly gentleman brought the first model vehicle (only to be out of the race the very first day when it could only go five miles a gallon). Almost all contestants were on horses, with the exception of one Native American who ran on his legs. Would’ve been preposterous if he wasn’t as fast as a damn stallion, he could keep up no problem!
But the lie? Only men could race. No women. Why? Well what did you expect from a time where men were law and their words were just? So you had to get creative. You wanted to win. That prize money could set you up for life. You had a beautiful mare just perfect for this race. A little touch ups on your end would do. Tucking your curls in a beanie, wearing oversized clothing, and a bandana over the lower half of your face and no one would know. And for a while, it worked. You were constantly in the top ten finishers with each section of the race. Not enough to stand out like the infamous Johnny Joestar, Diego Brando, or Gyro Zeppelli. But you weren’t a slouch either, you thought you could go unnoticed…..you were wrong.
”Hey mouse, mind if we join you?”
Gyro had his eye on you. He knew something was up, calling you ‘mouse’ since you never spoke and strangely enough, you never reeked like the others. Johnny noticed too. That became a problem for him. It was already enough having to deal with being paralyzed from the waist down, he didn’t want to be questioning his sexuality either. But Gyro’s next words caught his attention when you shook your head.
”Yeah I didn’t think you would. Johnny boy, I don’t think he is really a ‘he’.”
Johnny let out a sharp laugh, looking at Gyro incredulously. If you really weren’t a boy, that solved his attraction problems, but come on. There’s no women in this sport, it wasn’t allowed.
“What? Just cause the man doesn’t want to share a bathhouse with us means he’s a woman? Maybe he just wants privacy?”
