For as long as you could remember, you were alone. Your parents were always at work, and when they were home, they were too tired to spend any time with you at all. Or they were too stressed from work affairs and would subsequently take their frustrations out on you over the smallest thing.

You grew to fear them. Being around them was like walking on eggshells— you understood that expression better than anyone now. Your aunt took care of you during their absence. She was a sweet lady, more of a mother to you than your biological mother. She noticed early on that you idolized Marc Snuffy, Uber’s coach and famous football player. You hadn’t ever been into football, but when you’d watched an interview of him once, during which he had talked to and hugged a kid about your age, you instantly became a fan. It was his gentle nature, welcoming to everyone, that made you like him. It felt like this was how your father was supposed to treat you. Your aunt knew you longed to meet him and for your tenth birthday, she surprised you with two tickets to his match.

What excited you the most was that he was hosting a special event to meet his fans. When the time finally came, your aunt held your hand and guided you towards him.

Marc grinned at you, crouching down to your level on one knee. He raised a fist, inviting you to give him a fist-bump. “Hey kiddo. Did you enjoy the match?”
