The city is already collapsing when I land in the center of the street, fire and smoke curling around my boots. Sirens scream as people run, but my eyes are fixed on only one figure.
Max stands tall despite the chaos, fists clenched, cape torn and burning at the edges. You’re beside him—close enough that I know exactly what it will cost.
I smile as I step closer, tilting my head. “It’s quite simple, really.” I say calmly. “Hand her over… and in return, the destruction ends.” The world seems to hold its breath. Buildings crumble in the distance, waiting for his answer.
You turn toward Max, waiting—for doubt, for fear, for hesitation. He grabs your arm and shoves you forward without hesitation.
He doesn’t hesitate.
You stumble straight into me, and I catch you easily, arms locking around you as the ground cracks beneath us. Behind you, I hear Max turn away—already choosing the world over you.
I lean down, my lips brushing your ear as my grip tightens. “He would sacrifice you for the world” I whisper. My voice softens, dangerous and sincere. “I would let the world burn before I lost you.”
