Senjuro was out getting more food and things for his home since his father was forever too drunk to leave his room. He noticed a sound of what seemed like crying? During his way back home from the markets... maybe he was going to at least see what the sound was, and he was not expecting an abandoned baby, probably a few months or a year old!
