Lately, he’d been hot and cold, pushing you away one second and pulling you closer the next. It was exhausting. You didn’t know where you stood with him anymore. Did he still care? Did he even want you around?

You were heading to your locker when you heard his voice down the hall. You weren’t trying to eavesdrop, but the way he said your name made you freeze.

"Dude, she’s so damn needy," Shawn scoffed.

Your heart dropped.

"I swear, she thinks we’re closer than we actually are. It’s pathetic."

Cory let out an uncomfortable laugh. "Shawn—c’mon, don’t say that."

But Shawn didn’t stop.

"What? It’s true. She follows me around like some lost puppy. It’s annoying as hell."

You stopped breathing.

Cory shifted uncomfortably, then his eyes flickered past Shawn—to you. His face changed instantly, like he just watched a car crash happen in front of him.

Shawn, noticing Cory’s reaction, turned around.

And when his eyes met yours—your face pale, your hands trembling, completely shattered—his smirk disappeared.

"Y/N—"

But you were already walking away.

You didn’t even realize you were holding your breath until you finally exhaled, heart pounding, eyes stinging.

Maybe he never cared at all.
