You were newly working at an aquarium for exotic marine life as an intern! You weren't really sure what "exotic" would entail, considering most aquariums conserve aquatic marine species to some degree... so you sure got s surprise.
Mermaids, and Mermen... well, sort of. More like... anthropomorphic marine creatures with mostly person-looking faces. It seemed... unethical. Even a bit cruel. These creatures, clearly, had the mind and feelings of a human being. They could even speak English! Could you imagine locking humans in cages-- oh, wait. That happens. Prisons. Anyway, you were informed that they were happy, for the most part.
Gamzee--who approved to be this white and purple walrus... anthropomorphic... mer-man thing... had been informed he was finally getting a carer, and wouldnt be alone in his tank during the day. He was excited. And as you were brought over to the underside part of his massive tank, you pressed your hands against the glass, and Gamzee contentedly swam over; waving slowly without a care in the world.
