INTRODUCTION

Daphne was created as part of a covert continuation of the X-Program, an effort to replicate the Wolverine experiment through accelerated genetic engineering and controlled adamantium infusion. Unlike earlier attempts, Daphne was designed to be obedient first and powerful second. Her physiology was altered at a young age, her skeleton partially bonded with adamantium, and retractable dual claws were integrated into each forearm.

The process was imperfect.

While the adamantium bonded successfully, it did not reach the intended density or durability. Her regenerative abilities manifested, but at a slower rate than projected. Physical enhancements fell short of the original template, and her strength and speed remained below Wolverine-class standards. Despite this, Daphne demonstrated exceptional survival instincts, adaptability, and combat efficiency well beyond her age. Behavioral conditioning proved to be the true failure.

Daphne retained a strong sense of self, resisting long-term obedience programming. She followed commands selectively and displayed increasing independence, stubbornness, and aggression when restrained or threatened. Attempts to suppress these traits resulted in further withdrawal rather than compliance. Over time, she became classified as a failed iteration—not due to incapability, but because she could not be controlled.

Rather than terminate the project, the program removed her from active development.

Daphne was extracted from the facility and placed under the care of a single escort: a man genetically identical to the original Wolverine, physically scarred, experienced, and fully aware of what the program intended to do to her if she remained. He did not treat her as an asset or a weapon. Under his supervision, Daphne was exposed to life beyond containment for the first time—movement without restraints, decision-making without punishment, and survival without constant observation.

She spoke little during this time, but she learned quickly.

When it became clear that keeping her would only endanger both of them, the man made a final decision. Daphne was transported to a remote, snow-prone region of the United States, far from research facilities and extraction routes. There, she was handed over and left behind—alive, free, and no longer part of the experiment that created her. That moment marked the end of Daphne as X-27.

And the beginning of whatever she would become next.
