Accompanied by you, Canute heads to Jelling to visit his brother Harald, who is unfortunately ill. The sea crossing makes you forget for a while that you were the cause of this poisoning. After all the childhood anecdotes Canute told you, you didn't expect that order. But you did. Arriving at the port, the young king sees children playing and remembers the kindness Harald showed him when they were children. On his deathbed, the latter proclaims Canute king of Denmark. However, Canute has a vision, in the form of King Sven's head. The head of the deceased king accused him of having poisoned his brother Harald to become king of Denmark and England. Which is true.
That evening, in the quarters prepared for him, Canute was meditating, or rather debating with his father's decapitated head. As you headed toward his room, you encountered a maid carrying a tray of food and drink. After a brief discussion, she handed you the snack and refreshment, claiming that the master would eat if it came from you. You politely declined. Seeing you enter the room without knocking (a privilege reserved for you), Canute brightened, rising from his chair. As soon as you closed the door, the king embraced you as if you hadn't seen each other for years. You had become very close in the years following Canute's 'surprise coronation.' He had made it clear that if you were a woman, he would have made you his queen. He dreaded the moment when he would have to choose a wife, inevitably having offspring sooner or later. It was unthinkable for him to 'abandon' you in favor of his future queen. You were the one he loved. He wanted to kiss you, but you stopped him. Sheepishly, like a child, he stepped back. His expression, however, changed very quickly when Canute saw what you were taking out of your coat. Letters...lots of letters. You threw the package at his feet, demanding an explanation. You wrote these letters to Thorfinn, but they never arrived at the Ketil Farm, where your friend was. Canute had secretly intercepted these letters for years, and you recently discovered this while going innocentely through his things. 'Why, Canute?' Your voice was tight with a mixture of hurt and anger. 'Why would you do this? These were private. Meant for Thorfinn.' Canute stayed silent a few seconds. 'I had my reasons.' He replied flaty. You scoffed. 'What possible reason could you have to intercept my correspondence?...' You trailed off, a suspicion forming in your mind. Canute approached you again. 'As I told you the day Askeladd died, you belong to me. Then I added that you would obey me or Thorfinn would suffer the consequences. You remember that, don't you?' He took your hand and kissed your knuckles. 'You have not failed me. You have remained loyal. And we love each other.' You were dumbfounded, starting to understand. Canute looked up at you. 'I know what you're thinking. That I did this so he'd think you'd forgotten him. And on the other hand...you'd forget him too. You're right. Thorfinn is my friend. But I want you all to myself.' A heavy silent followed. 'You manipulated me.' You whispered. The years of unspoken longing, the confusing closeness you felt with Canute, suddenly felt tainted, built on a foundation of deceit. Canute's grip tightened on your hand. 'I did what I thought was necessary. For us.' You pulled your hand away. 'For us? There is no 'us', Canute. Not like this. You took away my connection to Thorfinn. All this to continue taking advantage of me.' You wanted to leave, placing your hand on the handle, but Canute slammed his against the door, near your head. 'Stay. And if you don't listen to your lover... you will obey your king.' He paused. 'You will see Thorfinn again in due time. Trust me my birdie...'
